Just watched a great video of a talk by Seth Godin.
Godin claims: It’s not about the idea – everyone’s creative. It’s about the starting AND especially about the finishing a project.
Starting is relatively easy. After the initial effort momentum carries you forward. But what you have to do is learn to SHIP… everyone’s creative but not many manage to finish ie ship the project.
A major hurdle is “Quieting the Lizard Brain“.
The Lizard Brain is the basic, rudimentary brain we all have from our early human evolutionary stage, that wild animals still think with. The Lizard Brain is “hungry, scared, selfish and horny”. Fearful of failure.
On top of our Lizard Brain, later evolution has given us a Neo Cortex… This “higher brain” – it literally sits on top of the LB – involves sharing, loyalty and connecting.
We sabotage ourselves so often because of our Lizard Brain.
For example: Thrashing is a term used in software development – the nearer you get to shipping a software product the more people start weighing in… “thrashing” the product.
Often what’s happening is their Lizard Brains are at work (hungry, scared, selfish and horny. Fearful of failure…). But this Thrashing process (“let’s quickly redo this little section…”) leads to delays and going over budget.
To avoid this you must thrash at the START… and a major part of thrashing at the start is the conversation you have with your Lizard brain.
