The nonprofit Games for Change, with financial backing from American Express, has launched Save the Park, an endless runner-style game designed to get players interested in actually volunteering at one of America’s 400-plus national parks. The game was created by educational game developer Schell Games and made available for iOS on March 1st. American Express will also donate a dollar to the National Parks Service for each of the first 50,000 times the game is downloaded.
The game includes four volunteer characters who complete such tasks as helping park visitors, planting trees, and collecting scientific specimens. Successfully completing tasks unlocks new levels across all three park environments, which include coastal, forest, and desert. The game includes interesting facts about the real national parks, and encourages players to explore real volunteer opportunities.
